Matthew Deschaine, LCSW, MSW, MA

I am a clinical psychotherapist specializing in the treatment of depression, mood instability, anxiety, stress, grief and life-transitions. I have a secondary specialization in high conflict relationships, family systems, and pre/post-divorce dynamics. Services are provided virtually and in-person depending on client preference and proximity to Brunswick, ME. A hybrid approach to care is also welcome.

The hallmarks of my style are warmth, insight, encouragement and connection. My goal is to create a feeling of genuine openness and trust in order for us to speak clearly and directly to the issues at hand.

The primary focus of our work is to create solutions, but that is not all. I foster a strong therapeutic relationship with every client, couple and family. The quality of that relationship is key. It is both the engine and vehicle for the therapy process. Together, we generate optimism, self-compassion and greater emotional clarity. These elements are foundational to healing and change.

In our work together, a sense of empowerment will develop. It typically starts with the chief concern, and then seeds other aspects of functioning and outlook. I call that experience: spiraling up. It is the opposite of feeling “stuck” and is our overarching goal.

To best help you, I select from therapies grounded in the science of Attachment and Interpersonal Neurobiology. More specifically, I use Relational, Emotion-Focused and Psychodynamic approaches. For couples work, I use the Gottman Method, a highly validated, evidence-based model. These tools maximize your hard-wired ability to adapt and repair, and are effective for individuals, couples and family systems.
